Event Description

What happened to the Eastside when the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Locks were completed, and Lake Washington’s water level dropped by nine feet? Over 100 years ago, on July 4, 1917 the Lake Washington Ship Canal had its grand opening. Over 50,000 people attended the event in celebration. But how did the changing shoreline affect the businesses and individuals from Kirkland to Renton?

Historian Richard Blumenthal will be discussing how the lowering of Lake Washington changed the river system surrounding Renton with his new book, “How Many Islands? A History Around Lake Washington”, at this Heritage Programming Author Talk event hosted by Eastside Heritage Center.

“How Many Islands? A History Around Lake Washington” is delivered with scholarly detail, and is told through the voice of a doting grandfather to his precious pre-teen granddaughter. This entertaining read is guided by the curiosity of a child and enlivened by the witty banter that bridges the generation gap. In addition to an examination of early land owners around the lake and a tour of our first settlements, this text explores the islands that exist within the lake.
