Event Description

Museums divide the art world by deciding whose work is worthy of their walls. The artists who make it past this divide count very few women and people of color in their numbers. We’ll take a look at the art activists who have responded to this exclusion through their work, from the birth of protest art to the Guerrilla Girls to what’s happening right now. The 2017-18 Series of Loggia Lectures explores the meanings of the Pledge of Allegiance through art history, incorporating periods from the Italian Renaissance to recent centuries of American art.
The Loggia Lecture Series is inspired by the Italian loggia, an outdoor space for engaging others in conversation or simply admiring the artfulness of the passing world. Each Loggia Lecture illuminates a significant art history topic that dovetails with an exhibition at BAM, creating opportunities for lively discussion throughout.
