Event Description

Join us at BAM to learn all about washi tape art! The joyful patterns and colors of washi tape nod to traditional, Japanese washi paper. Washi tape, introduced in 2006, has been popularized in the United States for its use in scrapbooking and journaling. Using washi tape as an art medium is new to the art world, but tape art has been around since the 1960s. Artist Melody Maleitzke will demonstrate her unique techniques creating art with washi tape. Students will use scissor-cut and hand-torn washi tape to create a cherry blossom branch artwork.
This showcase has been developed alongside the Washi Transformed: New Expressions in Japanese Paper exhibition, featuring 9 contemporary artists who have pushed washi beyond its traditional uses to create highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations.
