Students at Sammamish High School in Bellevue are among the select few getting to explore first-hand a hot art form.

The Bellevue high school is just one of four high schools in the country that have a glass blowing studio. Sammamish High School offers three classes on glass blowing: beginning, intermediate and advanced.

The three-class series covers the the basics of working with molten glass, with an emphasis on studio and hands on experiences. Students learn a variety of hot glass techniques such as sculpting and blowing, as well as warm glass techniques such as fusing and slumping, and explore new and more complex hot glass techniques. Students take field trips to observe contemporary glass artists at work and research glass artists and history.

For serious hot glass students, the advanced class offers students opportunities to expand their skills and develop their portfolio in breadth (variety of glass or other media approaches) or concentration (theme for a body of work).

The glass blowing classes at Sammamish High School are taught by local hot glass artist Melissa Misoda.
