To suggest that Ryoko Tajiri is a figurative painter is like suggesting that water is simply wet. It would be undemanding and lacking effort. It would leave on the table all of the things that make it critical to life, its complexities and its beauty. Include these and it becomes more than water and the reason we all stand and stare at the ocean becomes a bit clearer. Such is the case with the work of Ryoko Tajiri.
Tajiri has found a way to illustrate the rhythm that exists in the human form with exacting skill. In a reductive manner, the artist finds the greater abstraction that define our existence. Posture, color and presence in the frame serve to evoke a feeling or mood while the structered faceting disallows identity and lends itself to the formation of a bond between viewer and artwork. It is in this that Ryoko Tajiri has mastered her craft.
