Event Description

According to results of a survey fielded online among over 2,100 United States adults by Harris Interactive on behalf of the HNCA in January 2013, 64 percent of Americans are not knowledgeable about oral, head and neck cancer, and over 7 in 10 (71 percent) say that they have not been examined by a medical professional for the disease. Only 13 percent of Americans know that human papillomavirus (HPV) – the same virus that causes cervical cancer – is now associated with throat cancer.

“Over the past decade, there has been a shift in those at high risk for oral, head and neck cancer. This disease used to be most common among tobacco and alcohol users, but the quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population are young, healthy, non-smokers due to the connection of HPV exposure.” said Clara Song, DDS. “With an increase in HPV, our goal is to educate and provide a greater understanding of head and neck cancers because, when detected early, they are more easily treatable and the chances of survival greatly increase.”

Oral cancer is not a rare disease. Approximately 43,250 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the US. It kills one person every hour of every day, and over 115 new individuals will be diagnosed with it each day. The good news is that it can often be found early in its development, through a simple, painless, and quick screening. An oral cancer screening should be conducted every year.
