Bellevue Beat | Four must-try desserts in Bellevue this summer

Article and photos by Chris Bell

Imagine you're at your favorite Bellevue restaurant after a fantastic meal when the waiter hands you the dessert menu and you realize that no matter how good the dessert sounds you just don't have room for it. We've all been there. You want to try that signature dessert dish, but simply can't. So you leave the restaurant happy and full, but in the back in your mind you're wondering what you missed out on.

Well fear no more, I'm going to break down exactly what you missed so that next time you make room for dessert. I had the grueling task of trying four different signature dessert dishes at four great restaurants in downtown Bellevue. The restaurants in order of when I visited are The Lakehouse, 99 Park, John Howie Steak and Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar.

The Lakehouse

Signature Dessert Dish: Butterscotch pudding with banana bread, wild huckleberries, walnut brittle

This dessert quickly became the must-have dessert due to the nostalgic comfort food roots coming from the butterscotch pudding and banana bread elevated to another level with seasonal huckleberries and walnut brittle. Since The Lakehouse prides itself on local seasonal ingredients this variation of the dish with huckleberries will be available for a limited time.

99 Park

Signature Dessert Dish: House-made Donuts with dulce de leche, agave whip and cinnamon

A staple on the menu since the beginning, this simple and elegant dish keeps the locals coming back for more. With Latin inspired flavors this dish will remind you more of eating a fresh churro than an ordinary donut. Also, don’t forget to pair it with Graham’s 10 or 20-year Tawny Port.

John Howie Steak

Signature Dessert Dish: Semi-Sweet Chocolate Volcano Cake

A chocolate lovers dream with cascading whip cream and caramel is a sight to see. This classic dish has spent the past eight years making customers happy and has even played its part in a proposal or two. A flourless cake that shows no sign of age is the perfect way to cap off a John Howie experience.

Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar

Signature Dessert Dish: Banana Spring Roll Sundae

This tropical delight with fresh bananas, homemade rum caramel ice cream, pineapple, coconut and cinnamon will put a smile on your face after every bite. With the combination of the warm crispy banana filled spring roll and cold ice cream, this dessert is well balanced and proves why it's been on the menu for the past 16 years.
